Young marketers lend their services to not-for-profits

President's Report
By Roger Powell FAMI CPM, AMI Victoria President

Congratulations to our Emerging Marketers group, which has started a Community Involvement Program where they are providing assistance to four small not-for-profit organisations by helping them with marketing programs. This is a great effort by our young marketers and will benefit them and the community groups.

Spring has at last arrived in Melbourne and hopefully we can put away the winter clothes for another year. Our breakfast series continues to have strong support and we have had some very entertaining and informative sessions, which you can read about in this issue. Networking drinks at Sloaney Pony have also been a hit and we are now looking to expand this to other areas.

The state winners in the AMI Awards for Marketing Excellence Awards were announced at a well-attended luncheon at Crown on 16 September. Find out the winners in this article.

Victoria's top marketers honoured at awards

AMI Awards for Marketing Excellence report
By Christine Walker AMAMI

It is a great honour to receive the recognition of one’s peers, and the Australian Marketing Institute Awards for Marketing Excellence do this with great style.

The delight, pride and excitement that winning such prestigious awards bring to marketers were evident at the presentation to the Victorian winners at a luncheon at Crown on 16 September.

Marketers were treated to a delightful lunch, and the awards are a great opportunity to talk with peers about excellence in marketing and to catch a glimpse of the wide range of activities and skills being used by marketers to increase the value of their brands.

Less visible regulation proposals pack plenty of punch

CEO Breakfast Series Report
By Stephanie Clayton AMAMI CPM

‘The Impact of Advertising Regulation on Marketing’ was my first of the CEO Breakfast Series this year. The venue, Zinc at Fed Square, provided a relaxed and open space that made it easier for people to wander and chat.

The guest speaker was Daniel Leesong, CEO of The Communications Council. He launched his presentation with a bird’s eye view of the political climate to clearly position the state of advertising regulations today. While much has been reported in the news about the ongoing debate over advertising implications on food, alcohol and tobacco, the less visible proposals that have been presented to government are just as critical for the communications industry, especially the small print that goes with them.

Daniel used the example of the truth in political advertising bill presented by The Greens and the small print that surrounded it. Underlying this policy, through the scrutiny of political advertising, was the need for the ABC and SBS to be seen as the leaders in investigative journalism and the support to this (in relatively small print) to ensure their stations remain commercial free.

Crikey, I forgot my skirt!

CEO Breakfast Series Report
By Dianne Gardiner AMAMI

As a small business owner, my inbox gets clogged up every day. Many emails get deleted automatically when I am short on time, but every weekday an email arrives in my inbox at lunchtime and no matter how busy I am, I always seem to find time to at least have a glance over it.

What is this email? It’s from smartcompany.com.au and it contains an overview of what’s happening in the world of business and what could affect my business.  So, on this lovely sunny Melbourne morning I was looking forward to an inspiring CEO Breakfast Seminar with Amanda Gome, CEO of Private Media, owners of SmartCompany, Crikey, StartupSmart and Property Observer.

Amanda was a successful business journalist with BRW when she walked away to start SmartCompany at the age of 44. Amanda shared with us her tips for growing from start-up to sustainable business, based on what she has learnt as a business journalist, lecturer in entrepreneurship, and her personal experiences in starting SmartCompany and taking on the media giants.
