| The SA Harvey Norman Young Marketer of the Year Award was open to all undergraduate students from Adelaide Uni, UniSA and TAFE. Students were given a marketing brief and had two months to submit a marketing plan.
The winner was Tommy Do, from TAFE SA, who provided a detailed marketing plan that was well received by the judging panel and David Filsell from Harvey Norman.
Lauren McCabe, from Adelaide University, also put in a commendable effort to come in second place. Her plan was also well-received and ideas from both plans, as well as other entrants, will be looked at when Harvey Norman forms its marketing plans.
Along with the recognition of winning this award, Tommy Do also received a top-of-the-range laptop for winning the overall award, while he and Lauren also took home a digital camera for having the top plans at their respective tertiary institutions.
Albert Bensimon event: three-week internship prize won
Event report: Behind the Hoo-Ha!
By Victoria Ferguson, Magnet committee member
Magnet and the AMI presented Albert Bensimon, owner of Shiels Jewellers, at their 15 July event at the Belgian Beer Café. Albert gave us an insight into the man behind the hoo-ha!
Marketing professionals, students and recent graduates gathered to hear this successful entrepreneur speak about his exciting career. Albert spoke of his unique marketing strategies, such as jumping out of a plane and driving through town and Rundle Mall on a silver scooter, highlighting to us all the power of humour in advertising.
He inspired all as he spoke of challenges he had faced and how he overcame them, giving both students and young professionals some handy tips to getting their career under way. He said that the secret ingredient to his success in marketing was having passion for his product.
This great event not only provided students with the opportunity to meet and network with local marketing professionals, but also some great advice on how to be successful.
Albert also launched the Shiels Marketing Academy Award, which was recently presented at the Marketing Week Awards lunch on 26 September. The winner, Sophie Christian from Adelaide University, will receive a three-week paid internship at Shiels, working with Albert and his marketing team.
A special thanks to Albert Bensimon for providing one lucky attendee with a fabulous door prize and for his fantastic presentation, which was inspirational and beneficial to all.

As the world of digital media evolves, marketers must find the best way to spread the digital word by capitalising on the latest trends and technologies. Marketers must explore avenues to maximise their digital footprint, without burning money by backing the wrong trend or technology.
With prominent clients including Telstra, Virgin Mobile, VB, Pepsi, Big Brother and Australian Idol, Tigerspike has a wealth of knowledge to share about how to use mobile and online technologies to appeal especially to a younger, more technologically savvy target market.
Alex will focus on successful case studies, as well as the smart way to make the social networking phenomenon Facebook a part of your marketing effort while it is at its peak of popularity.
Presented by Magnet, young marketers' special interest group of the Australian Marketing Institute
Meet Your Match
Wednesday 8 October 2008
Hosted at The Advertiser in the building's function room, approximately 40 students, graduates, emerging marketers and 40 marketing professionals/managers participated in 'speed-networking' -- the former sat on one side of a long table and the latter on the other.
Each student had about three minutes to talk to the manager in front of them before the branded hand-clappers went off and they had to move on to the next manager. This happened for about 40mins with most students talking to around 10 marketing professionals.
