Emerging Marketers (SA) activities during 2010

In 2010, Emerging Marketers had six internships on offer, the foruth year of the Harvey Norman Award, the Mentoring Program, four events, including a session at Marketing Week.

How to Drive Your Marketing into Top Gear (19 May)

In a different format from the past two years, the event, held at Channel 9’s Kevin Crease studio in North Adelaide, was one of the most successful events of the year. Some of SA’s top marketers discussed the marketing and communication tools they are using to drive their brands into top gear, with Todd Miller, MD of Aussie-Inc, hosting the night.

The panel consisted of Anouska Thomson, Brand Manager at San Remo, Chris Dalton, Business Partner, Team Leader (Interactive-Community) at the Attorney-General’s Department, Peter Withy, Director at KWP, Miriam Leenders, Director of Marketing of Clipsal 500, and Kate Hannemann, Managing Director at communikate et al.

Brand YOU: New and improved personal branding (9 June)

Emerging Marketers held a professional development event at Barendoe on Hutt Street. The event focused on how young marketers can improve and promote their personal branding in an ever-changing career landscape.

Cathy Gray and Less Jameson, joint Managing Directors at Gray Management Group, and Dena Vassallo, General Manager at Professional Public Relations, shared their experiences and how they got to where they are now with the audience and gave them some tools so they could use to do it, too.

Internships and Harvey Norman Young Marketer of the Year Awards

There were six internships up for grabs for marketing, advertising and communications students. The companies were Shiels (in its third year), San Remo, National Pharmacies and Channel 9 (all in their second year), and Mitsubishi and Clemenger (both in their first year).

Each company posed a question to the students that directly related to an issue faced by their company. The applicants had to submit a 1000-word answer to the brief, with the top three making it through to the final round.

These finalists were invited to the Meet & Greet event (see below for more details), and each won a 1-3 week paid internship with the marketing department of these companies. Congratulations to the following winners:

  • Bonita Dixon – Shiels
  • Kate Gregory – National Pharmacies
  • Marie Trbovic – San Remo
  • William Lake – Channel 9
  • Natasha Hayes – Clemenger.
  • Jacqui Davey – Mitsubishi

In its fourth year, the Harvey Norman Young Marketer of the Year Award was also open to students. Similar to the internships, applicants had to submit a 2500 word answer to the brief, as set by Harvey Norman.

The award for 2010 was won by Robert McArthur from TAFE SA, who conducted his own research, including in-store surveys and a focus group, culminating in a compelling argument in response to the brief. Robert also won a 42” plasma TV, courtesy of Harvey Norman and Panasonic.

Each of these seven students were presented during the Marketing Week Awards lunch where they were formally announced in front of 200 or so of SA’s top marketers. If you want to see the briefs, click here.

Meet & Greet event (17 August)

Clemenger BBDO hosted the first Meet & Greet event, where the finalists of the six internships had a chance to meet the Marketing Managers and Directors from the internship companies. It was also where and when the six internship winners were announced and had the chance to swap details with their respective companies.

These six winners were invited to the Marketing Week Awards lunch the following week, where they were formally announced in front of 200 or so of SA’s top marketers. Check out some of the photos on our page on Facebook.

Marketing Week session – Big Ideas, Small Budgets (23-27 August)

During Marketing Week, Emerging Marketers hosted this session, which saw Jason Neave, MD of Adelaide digital agency Via Media, and social media expert Kelly Noble temper the multi-million-dollar case studies we see from other markets with a discussion on where to start if you have a few less zeros in your budget. With practical advice and real examples, this session was a must-see for organisations large and small who were looking for guidance on ways to get the most out of their digital marketing investment.

Meet Your Match (12 October)

The Meet Your Match event, held at the Sara Cens Hotel on Tuesday 12 October, had 20 marketing and advertising students and graduates speed-network with 20 well-known and successful marketing managers and practitioners.

For five minutes per person, and with just under 10 changes, participants spoke about career experiences and insights, career aspirations and tips on how to find a job, how to progress, and general tips on working in this industry.

End-of-Year Young Networking Party (11 November)

On Wednesday 11 November, an enchanting time was had by all who attended the Emerging Marketers 2010 End-of-Year Networking Party. The atmosphere was delightful as marketing managers, marketing students and the business sector of Adelaide mingled within the beautifully renovated gothic venue of The Promethean on Grote Street.  The night started with an entertaining comedy set by Mark Trenwith. Mark had the audience laughing with jokes relating to the marketing, advertising and brand management arenas.

The night evolved further with a few networking games, which had the audience meeting and greeting each other in a relaxed and social manner. Boutique wine was provided by the wine sponsor Lazy Ballerina and gourmet finger food by Glynburn Gourmet. The event went well into the night and was an excellent platform for students and recent graduates to expand their business networks with more senior contacts in Adelaide.

Mentoring Program in 2010

In its second year, the Mentoring Program grew to 15 matches and will continue to grow as it becomes more popular and the benefits continue to be seen. The 2010 Mentoring Program was successful from the point of view of both the mentees and mentors with some pairs continuing their relationship beyond what was required from this program. In fact, there are still people from the 2009 program who are still in regular contact!
