Employer Branding: Recruiting & Retaining Staff in the Public Sector

The collision of the skills shortage and the emergence of Generation Y have had a significant impact on the Australian labour market. But this collision has also brought some clear opportunities for public service professions seeking to attract the best and brightest talent.

This pre-conference workshop has been developed to assist agencies navigate the changing labour market and to attract and retain the best staff. It is relevant for both communications and human resources specialists.

The workshop program includes presentations from some of the country’s leading experts in employer branding and recruitment advertising. It will be facilitated by social researcher Mark McCrindle and will help you address the labour changes you are facing now and in the future.

  Workplace Retention: Make it work for you
Square Holes recently worked with SA Great and the Australian Institute of Management (AIM) on research to gain deeper insight and actionable directions for employers on the needs of young professionals. The research included targeted focus groups and a survey of 800 South Australian employees aged under 40. In his presentation, Jason Dunstone will present some of the findings of this research and the implications for agencies in other states trying to retain and entice good staff.

How are employers using advertising, media/channel and creative strategies to present their brands and influence their audiences’ perceptions? James Wiggins is head of Employer Branding at tmp worldwide, the largest employer branding practice in the APAC region. He believes that good recruitment campaigns aren’t simply about listing vacancies, but involve a more creative communications strategy. James will explore different strategies to attract and retain the best staff and will give you practical tips to use in your campaigns.

  ‘Go West Now’ Campaign
The WA Government’s ‘Go West Now’ initiative was launched in 2006 to address the state’s growing shortage of skilled workers. Find out how the campaign was developed in an exceptionally short time frame to attract skilled workers from interstate and overseas.

With WA in the grip of a labour-intensive, high paying and seemingly never-ending resources boom, one of Trudi Angwin’s major challenges has been to turn around the waning levels of attraction to the WA Police.
